I will tell you that in my 18 years of being a Psychologist, I have not found a therapy modality that works as quickly or effectively with my clients, particularly the "stuck" ones, as EMDR. But I won't spend any more time talking about that either.
I will tell you that I had to go through another session of EMDR myself and the personal change has been significant. I do not like to be vulnerable. A couple of weeks ago I posted about Grace and it was very hard for me to be that raw. I went to the Women of Faith conference a few weeks ago and what struck me the most was how open the speakers were, and that their openness what so much of what their impact was for my heart. The message was important, but the vulnerability is what allowed their message to have a deeper impact on my heart. So, when I was at the EMDR conference and paired up with the 2 other therapists that I had been paired with the first weekend. I decided that I would make a choice to be vulnerable and raw with them in the EMDR session, trusting them with my yuck. Doing EMDR on each other is a learning experience, a "practicum" if you will. Well, for almost all of us as recipients (there were 20 of us) we had significant healing. Therapists are not easy to do therapy on...we tend to over analyze everything and second guess it all.
Which I did;) But the topic that I chose to work on took me in so many directions that I did not anticipate. I dealt with a general sense of needing to be in control and my disgust with apathy. If you know me, you know that I tend to be a person who is driven...and who likes to be in control. I realized just how much certain situations in my life - losing Superman and Faith's baby sister, the extreme difficulty of raising Grace, and others I won't name in order to not disrespect those involved, have left me with this uncomfortable and not-normal-for-me sense of apathy and "what is the point." That has led to a whole host of issues. Some of them are not caring if the house gets cleaned, if the food gets cooked, if special time is spent with the kids, if extras are done as a family, etc. There has been so much "noise" in my head about my utter inadequacy as a mother, my value as mother, my inability to do anything worthwhile or helpful for these children...essentially my utter failure as a mother on every level I can think of (not so much about other areas of my life, just me as a mom). The lie that I have no positive impact on these kids, and cannot have any positive long term impact on these kids, used to pound at me every moment. I coped by...reading. I cannot describe to you the problem that I had with reading. I have loved to read since I was 6 years old. I remember being the best in reading in 1st grade and received so much joy from it. My whole life I have used reading for pleasure and escape from reality. But it became a huge problem when we lost Superman and Faith's younger sister (by the way, we got 2 pictures of her yesterday! She was smiling and looks so incredibly happy! She is 2 1/2 now:)
I have felt compelled to read. The only way I can describe it is feeling like an addiction. If I wasn't reading, I was thinking about the next time I could read again. If I went to bed without finishing a story I would dream all night about what the conclusion must be like. If I finished a book before bed, I would worry what the next book was that I was going to read, and if it would be any good or not. It was...all consuming.
But, through the process of the EMDR I came to realize the problem was not reading to escape my reality which is what I thought the problem was (and would beat myself up about which only perpetuated the cycle), but instead I was trying to escape the constant barrage of lies in my head about my inadequacy. I would cry with my husband and talk about who I "used" to be. The woman who graduated from college in 3 years and had my doctorate by age 25. About how I used to work full time and have 2 kids and a husband (oh, those days were NOTHING compared to reality now lol!) How did I "used to" do all of that and now I function doing the bare necessities?
Well, Saturday afternoon I had my hour of high emotion and insights as I went through my EMDR session (I felt bad for the woman who had to be my "therapist" for the session lol!) I was so thankful for the 2 woman that I became friends with and we could feel safe and vulnerable with each other, and sharing my faith as my central tenant of where I thought healing came from was consistent with their beliefs). I was thankful for the Women of Faith conference encouraging me to "go there." I have felt so different since then. So much like the woman I used to be. I woman with Hope. A woman with Purpose. A woman who does not just count down the minutes until reading can be accomplished again. A woman whose head is not filled with "noise."
I caught a cold on Saturday. My husband had come with me for the weekend while Beautiful stayed home with the kids (SOOOOOO THANKFUL FOR HER!!!!) We had processed my EMDR session over supper at Red Lobster (his favorite restaurant). Then we watched our state college football came together and relaxed...sigh...I was so looking forward to an uninterrupted night of sleep!!!! But, God had other plans;) I took some cold medicine at 11 p.m. I slept from 11:30 - 12:30 a.m. ...and...woke up for the night. I had forgotten that the medicine made me not be able to sleep:( I just laid in bed from 12:30 - 6:15 and sang praise music to myself and thought about there was a complete absence of the "noise." That was when I realized that I read so much to drown out the lies. There was no need to get up and read, as there was no noise to escape from:) At 6:15 I got up and read Haggai. I was so convicted by his words...and his warnings. I had to laugh at how God works...
Since then, I have had SUCH a productive week! In the past couple of years my productive spurts have been done by grit and determination. This week it was done because I wanted to.
I have deep cleaned Grace's bedroom (that is for another post, but essentially we have removed everything except for 15 changes of clothes and her bed. She REFUSES to clean up her belongings and is using all kinds of items to dig holes in walls, destroy her room, etc). We have developed a plan of how to deal with her and I feel confident that it is not out of desperation but it is actually out of hope...and confidence that God has this. He put her here. I don't know why but He did, so I need to be on board better!)
I have done a lot of organizing and planning for beyond the moment:)
I got a TON of paperwork done!
I have read, but it is MUCH MUCH less than usual. It is actually for enjoyment, not escape:)
Last night Grace had a dentist appointment so my husband and I took her (and JJ) out afterwards as a date for her. She did ok at the restaurant and her behaviors were very, very tolerable for the afternoon and evening. This morning started out rough but we have stuck to our plan on how to deal with her and she is coming around:) Usually I am so afraid to go out into public with her that I avoid it at all costs. I was glad that it turned out well:)
So far today (it is 2:45): I have done my hour on the treadmill, cleaned the kitchen, baked bread and cinnamon rolls with Faith (the rolls I usually do about once a year, the bread I used to stay on top of but lately we run out and it takes me days to make another loaf), defrosted the big freezer (which I usually do once a year but never got done last year), made a big breakfast for the kids (usually only done about once a month), done 2 loads of laundry (they are PUT AWAY! that rarely happens the same day;) and danced in the kitchen with the kids to Building 429:)
The chorus that I have been singing over and over and over this week is:
All I know is I am not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong!
This chorus gives me such hope. We are here for a fleeting moment. Before I felt crushed by the weight of my life. During the EMDR God reminded me "You were created to bear fruit." Before I would have felt that as a crushing obligation. But during the EMDR I felt it as a promise. He created me to be fruitful, and as His creation I will bear that fruit as He never makes a mistake. It was emotional. It continues to be emotional, but in such a healing way.
So, that is my vulnerable and raw admittance of my personal struggles and failures - as well as how God used EMDR to help me heal. And...I don't even feel raw and exposed sharing this with you - I just want to be real with you and, if you also feel "stuck," encourage you to find a therapist who does EMDR:) (although make sure they are fully trained, and even possibly certified). I am excited to move forward with the certification process and hope I can be done with that by Christmas or so:)
Praising God!
